Air-source heat pumps deliver heating & hot water, paired with MVHR, high-efficiency LED design, simple controls and efficient appliances; residual demand is offset via PV. Designed for manufacture & assembly with modular plant rooms and pre-made bathroom assemblies.

At ARK Academy (London) we reduced heating demand by using air-source heat pumps for both heating and hot water. Other low-energy initiatives included mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), high efficiency LED lighting, simple-to-use controls, and efficient white goods such as induction hobs. Any residual demand was offset with PV panels.

We then optimised the solution for design for manufacture & assembly (DfMA), developing a modularised plant room for the dwellings and pre-manufactured bathroom assemblies. The modular plant room houses the MVHR unit, heat pump and DHW generator, manufactured offsite and bolted to the outside of the house for rapid installation and quality control.

  • Technologies: ASHP (heating & DHW), MVHR, PV, LED lighting, simple controls, efficient appliances (induction hobs)
  • Scope: DfMA with modularised plant rooms (MVHR + heat pump + DHW), premanufactured bathroom assemblies
  • Outcome: Reduced demand, lower carbon, faster installation and consistent quality
